No iPhone for me (yet) … and life still goes on

When I heard about the new 3G iPhone at half the price of the original iPhone, I knew I wanted one (I never bought the original one). I waited patiently until the big day (July 11, 2008) finally came, and showed up at my local AT&T store at around 9:30 to purchase the 16GB model. It was then that I was greeted by an AT&T sales associate whose first words were, “Well, we’re sold out.” Then, he proceeded to tell me that they were taking orders, and if I paid my money then, I could get my phone in 5 days. If not, I would have to wait…gasp…2 weeks!
I’m a tech geek. I love new, cool gadgets. But I also have a life outside of my desire to have new cool gadgets, so I decided to keep my money and wait until the hoopla died down. Yes, I just said “hoopla.” Anyway, I was reading a blog that I sometimes read called CrunchGear.com, which is all about cool new gadgets, and I read this post about a guy upset that Apple and AT&T were “in cahoots” to make it seem like there was a shortage on the first day. Silly marketing stunt aside, I couldn’t get over how upset this guy was. I mean, come on. It’s just a phone. So you might have to wait a couple weeks. Big deal. Life goes on. There are more important things in this world to worry about. Please, step back for a minute and take a nice big dose of perspective.
I, for one, will be content with my Motorola RAZR (yes, the one that was popular 5 years ago) until Apple and AT&T have enough iPhones that I can get one without having to wait in line for hours.
That's it. What Next?
